The company was founded in 1939 in Pontecesures, Pontevedra
Founded by Elisardo Tarela, it was started to address early demand for the transport of products and the opening up of supply routes, mainly for fresh milk, with Nestlé in Pontecesures as its first customer.
Its main task was the collection of part-loads. The work was done with just one lorry: Collect the cargo and deliver it, doing the same rounds twice a day.
Demand soon led to the need for more lorries. Transportes Luis Tarela started to take on other routes.
At that time, the business changed its name to Viuda de Tarela, with management of the family business passing to Elvira Pereiro for a number of years. Subsequently, Luis Tarela took over the business, formed Transportes Luis Tarela, S.L. and built it into a market leader.
Transportes Luis Tarela was born into a challenging socioeconomic environment. Spain was dealing the consequences of its Civil War and the post-war period, which had pushed the country into a profound crisis. The geographic isolation of Galicia made communication with the rest of the country difficult. Poor roads and the low build quality of its first lorries taught Transportes Luis Tarela lessons for the future.
At the beginning of the 1960s, Transportes Luis Tarela expanded for the first time. The company set up regional collection centres. Those centres handled milk, testing and sterilisation and other activities. Transportes Luis Tarela introduced full load tanker-lorries.
Until the mid-1960s, Transportes Luis Tarela worked only on routes within Galicia.
he Spanish market opened up in the 1970s. Transportes Luis Tarela launched itself into the rest of Spain. At the same time, there was increased demand for transport of return cargo of different products such as wine and oil. They are ideal for haulage in tanker-lorries. Little by little, both customers and cargos became more diverse.
Transportes Tarela SL became in a short period one of the principal businesses in the bulk transport of foodstuffs throughout Spain.
From the 1980s on, Transportes Luis Tarela S.L. moved into the European market.
Obtaining quality certifications and consents required by the European Union was the first objective. That enabled the business to transport goods throughout the EU.
Gradually the fleet was upgraded, allowing the business to grow at an optimal rate.
Así, Transportes Luis Tarela started to offer haulage services to customers throughout Europe..
